i am in Bakersfield,CA It has not really changed since I visited 5 years ago. it is still flat it is still brown in most places. Today it is NOT hot or dry, I brought the weather with me from Seattle. The plane was the size of a kayak! Hwy99 south from Fresno to Bakersfield has filled in a lot- from what i could see in the dark there are buildings in sight of each other almost all the way south. Staying with Dad is a lot like living in an upscale magazine devoted to Asian antiques. My bed has mosquito netting. I get nervous in most of the rooms because the breakable porcelain, jade, framed art etc. is worth about 10 times my annual income (per room) I will take home many pictures

My new blackberry is supposed to make it possible to keep up with LJ without my having to go off somewhere with the laptop to wi-fi for my mail etc. I just sent a letter (yes on actual paper) to the waifs English teacher about her weekend home work "when your family watches the Superbowl keep track of which commercials have a mythological basis". So got to explain that we do not have commercial television (no cable, dish network, etc.)and we would not in any case voluntarily subject any member of the family to the NFL against their desires. If she wants the waif to watch commercials she will have to record them and send them home, download them to a drive and send them home or send her to the schools computer lab to watch them. I expect screams of distress! Can't they just read up on myths, legends, and folklore, write some reports (Word docs are OK, I'm not a total technophobe)maybe watch a couple of Joseph Campbell interviews? Nope, watch TV and see if you can figure out which mythos they butchered this week to sell more stuff!

It's too hot to sleep and too bright to go out. The air quality sucks, anemically. I hate Verizon, or maybe I hate Blackberry. So far they have sold me a broken phone, erased all my stored data, failed to support online back-up (but only for MY model), ignored my questions about Linux compatibility, and delayed and or lost my e-mail four times in the last 3 weeks. I spend most of August transitting between Bremerton and Renton- I depend on the blackberry to get to my mail. Aaaaaargh! Can we go back to paper and ink? It was slower but at least it didn't evaporate between send and receive. I have made myself a new promise-NEVER schedule anything complicated in August!  On the other hand the twins are marvelous, and the autistic babble from my son has slowed down (and he seems to have made the connection that a clean house = happy mom- I woke up Saturday am and both the dishwasher and the laundry were running, the coffee was fresh, and I got to pet the cats in peace for a whole 10 minutes!) I wrote an entire outline, so maybe now I can fill it in with the entire book. The new diet seems to be eliminating some of the more irritating of the rheumatoid symptoms. Drugs are good! Cheap drugs are better! (as more of my expensive meds go generic the family budget rejoices) September fast approaches, perhaps the Ides therof will be better.

....cut fear my government.  I used to see that bumper sticker a lot.  When did people forget that the two are not synonamous? My country, perhaps even my nation, used to be a standard to which others aspired, not an unfunny international joke. There was at least a public commitment to the ideals of the constitution, a polite public discourse about the wisdom of legistlating outcomes, and a willingness to observe at least outwardly the traditions of privacy and moderation.  My government used to be the mechanism through which the expressed will of a concerned and moderately well educated population was enacted.  Now it's running extraterritorial concentration camps, engaging in conflicts which cannot be described as anything so legal as a police action (perhaps a secret police action?) and so pervasively ingnoring the 'general wellfare' and ' domestic tranquility' as to be actively obliterating the 'blessings of liberty' for just about everyone ( that would be the 'posterity' part)  We can't even manage the preamble to the constitution, much less get to the more significant parts of the body thereof. My 19 year old son is about to graduate from high school and the only place he has ever heard the preamble is on schoolhouse rock. I had to explain it to him.  Than I had to listen to  three days of autistic rant on 'stupid people' and ' why isn't this on the WASL? ' That'a a good question. I have no answer.  At least not one which is not both scatological and derogatory of the (probably innocent) ancestry of a number of (mostly) public officials. Mike has never read the constitution, although he has heard the Bill of Rights. He can only cite parts of the 1st, 2nd, and 5th amemdments. He did not know that the ERA had never been passed into law. He has never read the abstracts of Roe vs. Wade or Brown vs. the Board of Education. He has never heard of Watergate, or the Oliver North hearings. He has never heard ALL of any Martin Luther King speech. He doesn't understand the differance between a law and an executive order. I had to draw a timeline of WW2 before he got that the war was more than half over before the USA got into it. I got to explain the Cuban missile crisis, the Bay of Pigs, and the Cuban embargo when Fidel Castro resigned. As a result of these trying discussions I have some questions about public education.
1. When did 'life science' , 'physical science', and 'earth science' replace biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy and geology?
2. When did 'keyboarding skills' and 'inroduction to the internet' replace spelling, grammer, and study skills?
3. When did 'US government' and 'US history" become 'current events' (based on internet media bytes)?

Once upon a time I married a guy whose birthday fell on March 15th. Yup, the Ides of March. If I had stabbed him instead of divorcing him I might be famous (or infamous).  Update on the family- nobody has died or gone to jail. I have NOT become a tower sniper. I HAVE tried to explain to the son, who is having a series of seriously autistic moments, that stupidity and ignorance are not the same- ignorance can be cured by a combination of reality therapy ( fair is only useful to describe cloudless skies) and decent education (almost by definition not found in the public school system).  Stupidity is probably both permanent ant terminal- the problem is that it is rarely terminal in either rapid or useful ways. To wit- check out today's LJ writers block moment- will someone PLEASE call the grammar police! Is a super star  something like a super nova?  Why should I do anything to one? Does the question "What would you like to do to him/her?" really need to be answered in a public forum?  Going to breakfast with my daughter and my niece today. (Implied subject) And I really did see a poster in a school exhorting people to "Drive nice!"

12th night is nearly here and so I must gently un-decorate my house, find homes for all my neat stuff, and give up and call my slothful brothers. I have three grown brothers, all married, none of whom sent a card or dialed the phone at any time between Thanksgiving and the new year. Last year I called each of them separately, AND sent cards. Next year I think I will just show up for the holidays and let them sweat over what to get me on no notice at all. OTOH I had a great quiet holiday, and am actually getting a lot of stuff done around the house. In the meantime I will really truly try to keep up on my e-mail. really.

Husband- EMPLOYED
Son-still autistic, but babbling less
Daughter- turned 23
Son-in-law-FINALLY able to legally work in this country!
Cats- too many
Friends- many having the same crappy month I'm having

Here's the deal, folks. I want to eliminate everything from th 15th of November to the second of January. Instead I want two weeks of Harvest Home, so that everyone can contact and interact with their friends and relatives about the positive aspects of their year. I want to follow this up with 33 days of Manyasadh.  Manyasadh is a family tradition we have that started as a way to truly enjoy the many December birthdays of our extended family. It starts with Pictsy days, when my husband gets razzed about his age, height, and general roundness and we hand him books, sporting goods, and treats that are probably insurung that he maintains said roundness. Then, with a few days rest we leap into the festivities of Pookynalia. Pooky, aka Anne, is also handed treats and goodies, many of them VERY, VERY, SHINY! This year she got a stealth tiara so that she can be the crown princess of all she surveys in secret. A couple of days rest and the the main rituals of the season occur. Manya, of course, is the leader of all this silliness. She will wear a different tiara to work every day for a week. Screamingly bright colours are mandatory. There must be glitter and glitz for all. There must be chocolate in profusion, also 'mit schlag' (with whipped cream) at every suitable occasion. There will be giggly carol singing, and schmaltzy DVDs. Everyone who possibly can must go on pigrimage to the Westlake carousel, eat a lollipop at Sees' and have too hot chocolate. (Pooky says it was desecrated by a new paint job. It was done in Chilliwack CANADA, and looks like the guy was practicing for a low-rider decorating contest a la Tiajuana. If she weren't married to one she would probably curse several generations of artistically challenged northern neighbors to an eternity of dingle balls and cold curry)
Come forth all those stressed out by holiday fever! Wear shiny stuff and eye-searing non-xmas colours, drink a chocolate toast ( fortified if posssible), and shop anywhere except malls!  Blessed Manyasadh to all!!
